THE AMERICAN THEATER

The American Theater was located on North Main Street in Pittston and opened in June 1924. It had seating for 1,000 and only one screen. This was the largest theater built in the Pittston area and was located in the main business area between the Water Street and Fort Jenkins Bridges. It hosted vaudeville shows, big band music concerts and movies for most of its life. It operated until the late 1960s and sat empty until the building was demolished in the early 1980s for a parking lot.

American Theater
was located
44-52 North Main Street,
Pittston, PA18640

THE BREAKER

This is a circa 1930 photo of the Maltby Breaker, Swoyersville. This is a glimpse inside the opening to the tunnel which leads towards the Avondale Mine shaft. This is the very same tunnel, which was used to remove the 108 miners and 2 rescuers who perished in the September 6, 1869 Avondale Mine Disaster. It is a warm humid June day in 2011. But, the cool 50 deg air that fills the mine and escapes through the tunnel opening, remains timeless.
